Jordan Reed and Mark Nzeocha headed to short-term IR, other 49ers injury updates

Sep 28, 2020 at 3:47 PM--

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters on Monday that tight end Jordan Reed and linebacker Mark Nzeocha are headed to short-term injured reserve. Reed is dealing with an MCL sprain that will take six to eight weeks of recovery while Nzeocha suffered a quad strain.

Reed suffered his injuries during Sunday's win over the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium. He suffered an ankle injury during the first quarter, returned to the game, but then had to later exit due to the knee injury.

"I think he played great," Shanahan said. "I was really happy with Jordan. Got a little late start with us, especially in a short offseason. Eased him in there the first game but did great in his 10 plays that he got. I thought he was one of the best players on the field in the second game. He was coming out strong in this game. He was going to be a huge part of that.

"He had an unfortunate injury. Recovered from the ankle there in the end zone but ended up spraining his MCL, I believe when he came back for that catch where he got hit a little bit low.

"I know he's disappointed but not discouraged. I think he was really liking where he was at. It's something that's going to take some time, probably six-to-eight weeks. I know he's disappointed in that, but nothing that's going to affect him after that.

"He'll hit his rehab hard. Hopefully, we can weather the storm while he's gone, and he'll come back to a good team."

Other injury updates from Shanahan:

  • Cornerback Emmanuel Moseley is in the concussion protocol.
  • Running back Jerick McKinnon is day-to-day with a rib contusion.
  • Linebacker Dre Greenlaw is expected to miss this weekend's game against the Philadelphia Eagles with a quad injury.
  • Cornerback K'Waun Williams is dealing with some hip discomfort. The 49ers are looking into that and will see how he feels on Wednesday.
  • The 49ers will assess the statuses of tight end George Kittle (knee), quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle), running back Raheem Mostert (knee), and cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon (hamstring) when the team resumes practice on Wednesday.
  • Defensive end Dee Ford (back) is not expected to play this weekend, and the 49ers will decide in the next few days whether or not to place him on short-term injured reserve.

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan informed reporters that Jimmy Garoppolo would be a full participant in practice on Wednesday, indicating that the plan is for the quarterback to start on Sunday night against the Los Angeles Rams. At least, that remains the hope. "He's ready to go out there and go today," Shanahan said. "He's still coming back from it, but I expect him to have a full practice, and I'll evaluate him out there." The coach added that he felt Garoppolo practiced well last week, and the team was confident in his health, leading to Sunday's game against the Miami Dolphins. "I think that's why he was able to get through most of the game, and probably could have continued to get through most of the game," Shanahan added, "but I

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan informed reporters that running back Raheem Mostert suffered a high-ankle sprain on Sunday night against the Los Angeles Rams. "We'll see how it progresses," Shanahan said. "Most likely IR (for Mostert)." Mostert will have company. Center Ben Garland left Sunday's game with a calf strain and will be "out for a while," according to Shanahan. He will "most likely" land on injured reserve later this week too. Shanahan said Hroniss Grasu would replace Garland until center Weston Richburg can return (see below). Shanahan also provided the following injury updates. Safety Jaquiski Tartt suffered a groin strain. The 49ers will learn more this week about the severity of the

Running back Raheem Mostert suffered an ankle injury on Sunday night during the San Francisco 49ers' 24-16 victory over the Los Angeles Rams. Head coach Kyle Shanahan isn't sure yet about the severity of the injury. "No, we don't know yet on Raheem," Shanahan told reporters after the game. "I'm sure we'll find out tomorrow. I know he tried to come back. I think he did at the end of the second quarter. He tried to come back in. I think he did one play in the third quarter, and then he couldn't go." Mostert finished the game with 17 carries for 65 rushing yards and added two catches for 11 receiving yards. The 49ers coach knows what Mostert means to his offense. The running back has proven to be a game-changer. "I think Raheem has shown
