Staying healthy the key to 49ers’ Super Bowl hopes, says ESPN

Sep 9, 2020 at 6:44 AM--

Bill Barnwell of ESPN made a case for all 32 NFL teams to make it to Super Bowl LV. Yes, even the Jacksonville Jaguars, who, according to ESPN, have the lowest odds to get that far. The San Francisco 49ers were able to reach the big game last season, which surprised many analysts, and came close to winning it all.

What is the key to the 49ers' Super Bowl hopes? Staying healthy.

"To get back and over the top, they need quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to stay healthy and some of his receivers to join him," wrote Barnwell. "We already know how great the defensive line can be, but the 49ers' defense took a step backward when it lost linebacker Kwon Alexander and safety Jaquiski Tartt to injury at midseason.

"On the whole, the Niners had the league's seventh-most injured defense by adjusted games lost; if they can be healthier on defense and the Seahawks take a step backward, as expected, San Francisco could run this back in 2020."

Only three teams had better odds, per ESPN, of reaching Super Bowl LV. They are the Kansas City Chiefs, Baltimore Ravens, and New Orleans Saints.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch have done a great job rebuilding the 49ers roster, and that culminated in an impressive 2019 campaign that ended with a Super Bowl berth.

Added Barnwell: "San Francisco had been 14-47 since Jim Harbaugh left for Michigan, and then they won 15 games between the 2019 regular season and playoffs."

49ers' Nick Bosa staying with brother, Joey, during ACL rehab

By David Bonilla
Oct 16, 2020

The outlook for the 2020 San Francisco 49ers changed dramatically when second-year defensive end Nick Bosa went down with a torn ACL during Week 2 against the New York Jets. That's how good Bosa is. He is a game-changer on the edge of the once-formidable Niners defensive line that has also lost Solomon Thomas for the year to a torn ACL, and veteran Dee Ford is out indefinitely with a back injury. Joey Bosa of the Los Angeles Chargers told reporters on Wednesday that his younger brother, Nick, is staying with him and his parents during his rehab. "It's nice having them around," Joey Bosa said. "They're keeping the place [tidy] for me and food constantly running. I can't

49ers' Richard Sherman says he's 'doing a lot better,' hopes to return soon, calls Jason Verrett 'elite'

Oct 21, 2020

Matt Barrows of The Athletic reported on Tuesday that San Francisco 49ers cornerback K'Waun Williams is eyeing a Week 8 return against the Seattle Seahawks from his ACL sprain. Could Richard Sherman return around the same time and give the defensive backfield a boost? It sounds like Sherman is getting closer to returning. Head coach Kyle Shanahan remains hopeful that his veteran cornerback can get back on the practice field soon after sitting on injured reserve with a calf injury since September 16. Sherman recently received injections to help reduce the inflammation and speed up his recovery after a small setback. "I'm doing a lot better," Sherman said this week on the Cris Collinsworth Podcast, which he co-hosts. "It's coming along. It's starting to

ESPN speculates on 49ers-Le'Veon Bell connection, Kyle Shanahan says "I'm good with all our guys"

By David Bonilla
Oct 14, 2020

Bill Barnwell of ESPN speculated on potential landing spots for recently-released running back Le'Veon Bell, formerly of the New York Jets. And that's really all it was — speculation. Still, the San Francisco 49ers were on Barnwell's list of plausible suitors. Much of that seems to do with the 49ers' past interest in Bell. The team pursued Bell last year in free agency before the running back agreed to join the Jets. Head coach Kyle Shanahan compared the pursuit of Bell to the team targeting and signing Tevin Coleman. "The
