New San Francisco 49ers tight end Jordan Reed has dealt with seven concussions over his career. The symptoms from his latest one prevented him from playing last season. Reed consulted with several experts since then, and even considered retirement. However, watching one game changed his mind.
It was Super Bowl LIV between the 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs.
Watching that game provided the spark that the former Washington player needed to push forward and sign with the 49ers. So far, he has no regrets about that decision.
"I definitely thought about hanging it up after last season," Reed told reporters on Sunday. "It was when I seen the Super Bowl that really kind of ignited me again, and just, I want to play in those big games.
"God blessed me to be here and part of this great team. He gave me an opportunity to be in that situation, so that's what's driving me. I just love the game of football, and I've still got the drive to keep playing."
The 49ers have been cautious with Reed's return to the football field, slowly ramping up his workload during training camp. Once he got involved in team drills, though, the tight end's potential to improve San Francisco's offense became evident.
And Reed is having a good time with his second NFL team.
"This is the most fun I've had playing football ever, honestly," Reed admitted. "I don't know if it's because I didn't play all season last year or what, but since I've been out there, I've just been having a blast."
Added Reed: "Coming from Washington, coming here, it's a big change for me, big coaching change. Everything is upbeat, positive. Everybody's doing their job to the best of their ability. It just brings out the best in you because you want to fit the standard here. I'm grateful for being here, for sure."
