50 execs, players, coaches rank Trent Williams as a top-3 NFL tackle

Jul 11, 2020 at 8:12 AM--

ESPN's position-by-position rankings continue. George Kittle on Tuesday was listed as the NFL's best tight end after writer Jeremy Fowler conducted an extensive poll involving 50 league executives, coaches, scouts, and players. The latest top-10 ranking involved offensive tackles, and the San Francisco 49ers were represented by one of their offseason additions — Trent Williams.

Only Tyron Smith of the Dallas Cowboys and Laremy Tunsil of the Houston Texans ranked higher.

Williams, 31, missed all of last season with Washington. Fowler notes that his contract dispute with his former team impacted some of the voting.

"He was dominant the last few years he played, and now he's well-rested," said one NFL defensive assistant. "I expect him to dominate again."

The 49ers acquired Williams via a trade in April, sending a fifth-round pick in this year's draft and a third-rounder next year to Washington in exchange for the tackle. In doing so, they replaced their six-time Pro Bowl tackle, Joe Staley, who retired, with a seven-time Pro Bowl tackle.

"One AFC exec said Williams' transition to San Francisco could be the best and worst thing for him, because he sometimes gets lazy on run blocks to the back side, which the 49ers emphasize," writes Fowler.

Washington made Williams the No. 4 overall pick in 2010. He has played in 120 NFL games, starting all but one.

The New Orleans Saints handed the San Francisco 49ers several opportunities to steal a road win against a heavily-favored opponent. Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers offense, however, seemed uninterested. San Francisco committed four turnovers, including two interceptions thrown by quarterback Nick Mullens, on the way to a 27-13 defeat. "As a whole, a bright spot is I thought our guys were fighting their ass off," head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters after the game. "There's no moral victories here, but I knew there was a big challenge going in. I'm sick at how hard they fought and that we had a chance to win that game, and I think it really came down to

The salary-cap strapped San Francisco 49ers will have some tough decisions to make during the upcoming offseason. The salary cap is expected to drop, and the team has several key players — including many starters — scheduled to hit free agency. One of those players is veteran offensive tackle Trent Williams, whom the 49ers traded for in April. The Green Bay Packers just made left tackle David Bakhtiari the highest-paid offensive lineman in NFL history. He will average $23 million a season over his four-year extension. Williams is earning just over half that amount this season and is playing well. He is currently tied with Garett Bolles of the Denver Broncos as Pro Football Focus' highest-graded tackle. Kyle Shanahan is just trying to get
