50 execs, players, coaches rank Trent Williams as a top-3 NFL tackle

Jul 11, 2020 at 8:12 AM--

ESPN's position-by-position rankings continue. George Kittle on Tuesday was listed as the NFL's best tight end after writer Jeremy Fowler conducted an extensive poll involving 50 league executives, coaches, scouts, and players. The latest top-10 ranking involved offensive tackles, and the San Francisco 49ers were represented by one of their offseason additions — Trent Williams.

Only Tyron Smith of the Dallas Cowboys and Laremy Tunsil of the Houston Texans ranked higher.

Williams, 31, missed all of last season with Washington. Fowler notes that his contract dispute with his former team impacted some of the voting.

"He was dominant the last few years he played, and now he's well-rested," said one NFL defensive assistant. "I expect him to dominate again."

The 49ers acquired Williams via a trade in April, sending a fifth-round pick in this year's draft and a third-rounder next year to Washington in exchange for the tackle. In doing so, they replaced their six-time Pro Bowl tackle, Joe Staley, who retired, with a seven-time Pro Bowl tackle.

"One AFC exec said Williams' transition to San Francisco could be the best and worst thing for him, because he sometimes gets lazy on run blocks to the back side, which the 49ers emphasize," writes Fowler.

Washington made Williams the No. 4 overall pick in 2010. He has played in 120 NFL games, starting all but one.

San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle expressed some dissatisfaction with some of his ratings in the latest installment of the popular multi-platform football video game, Madden NFL 21. His biggest issue wasn't narrowly being denied membership to the highly-coveted "99 Club" within the game, though. Kittle's biggest gripe seemed to be his breaking-tackles rating of 81, which tied for second on the team. "If Deebo (Samuel) has a higher breaking-tackles rating than me, that's just not okay," the tight end said. "It's Deebo, isn't it?" Yes. The second-year wideout owns a rating of 83 in that category. "Sure, whatever," Kittle added. "I think I led the

NFL.com senior analyst Gil Brandt ranked the top NFL trades from this unusual offseason. At the top of his list was the Houston Texans sending wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins to the Arizona Cardinals, which will likely impact the NFC West for years to come. At No. 3 was the San Francisco 49ers' trade of defensive tackle DeForest Buckner to the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for the No. 13 overall pick. The 49ers moved down one spot and then used the resulting selection on Buckner's replacement, Javon Kinlaw. One spot lower, at No. 4, is another 49ers-related trade. This time, it was San Francisco acquiring the retired Joe Staley's replacement, offensive tackle Trent Williams, from Washington in exchange for a 2020 fifth-round pick and a 2021

Pro Football Focus ranks Trent Williams No. 8 among offensive tackles

By David Bonilla

Pro Football Focus ranked the top 25 offensive tackles in the NFL. For the San Francisco 49ers, the starters anchoring the offensive line are veteran Trent Williams, who replaces the retired Joe Staley after a trade from Washington, and third-year player and a former No. 9 overall draft pick, Mike McGlinchey. Only one of those two ended up on the ranking — Williams, who came in at No. 8. "In the wake of Joe Staley's retirement, the 49ers swooped in and replaced him with another top-10 tackle in Williams," wrote Anthony Treash of Pro Football Focus. "He didn't play a snap for Washington last year, but he was the model of excellence as a pass-blocker in
