NFL cancels Weeks 1 and 4 of preseason, eliminating Broncos, Chargers from 49ers’ schedule

Jul 1, 2020 at 1:59 PM--

The NFL is canceling Weeks 1 and 4 of the preseason, according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. The league is reportedly expected to announce the decision on Thursday.

"The move was driven by two primary factors," writes Florio. "First, teams who will be playing preseason games on the road won't want to move that many people. Second, given that no teams had on-field practice sessions in the offseason, coaches would rather have the extra time to work with their teams, and that will happen if they don't have to worry about two extra preseason games."

For the 49ers, this will mean the elimination of the team's August 15 road game against the Denver Broncos, and their annual matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers, which was scheduled for September 3 at Levi's Stadium.

That leaves a home game against the Las Vegas Raiders on August 21 and a road game against the Chicago Bears on August 29 as the 49ers' only remaining preseason games.

Our schedule page will be updated once the NFL makes an official announcement.

H/t to Patrick Tulini for the find.

While he feels two would be the sweet spot, he would prefer zero as opposed to four. "This is the first time we've gone without preseason," Shanahan said on the

Emmanuel Moseley offers this advice to undrafted players who won't have a preseason

By David Bonilla

San Francisco 49ers cornerback Emmanuel Moseley wasn't drafted, so he had to fight harder to prove himself during his rookie offseason in 2018. The hard work earned him a spot on the team's practice squad, and he was eventually promoted to the active roster for a game against the Oakland Raiders. But a shoulder injury landed him on injured reserve. Moseley earned a spot on the 53-man roster last year, thanks to a strong offseason and preseason. He is grateful for the opportunities to prove himself and realizes incoming undrafted rookies may not have the same chance this year. There have been no team-organized offseason practices due to the coronavirus
