Offensive tackle Trent Williams joined 95.7 The Game on Friday morning and discussed what he went through during the draft as the stage was set for him to leave Washington and join the San Francisco 49ers.
As he discussed with reporters on Thursday, there was interest from the Minnesota Vikings, who many felt was the likely destination. The 49ers really came out of nowhere but were actually Williams' preferred destination.
"There was an option to go a few places, and Minnesota was one of them," Williams said on the Joe, Lo and Dibs show. "... They wanted something long-term, which I didn't mind, but our ideas for long-term situations didn't really match. That's just kind of how that fell apart.
"But the 49ers was the destination from day one. To be here, I'm ecstatic. You know, (I was) just sitting there (on) draft day, just hoping that they can pull it off.
"Obviously, everyone's kind of privy to the history of Dan (Snyder) and the Shanahans, so that was planted in the back of my mind, just hoping that didn't sabotage the deal, and it didn't. Everybody had their business mind on, and we got it done."
The 49ers ended up trading a fifth-round pick from this past draft and a third-rounder in next year's to Washington in exchange for Williams. He is in the final year of his deal, though, and both he and the 49ers were comfortable seeing how that unfolds.
"Obviously, I'm where I want to be," Williams added. "I don't really foresee leaving, but the business is the business. I have one year left, and I'm going to do my best to just try to make my resurgence as one of the best tackles in the game. If I can do that, then I know the rest will just take care of itself."
