OverTheCap.com has published the details of San Francisco 49ers defensive end Arik Armstead's new six-year deal ... I mean, five-year deal. Wait, which is it?

The contract is essentially a five-year deal, as reported by the masses. It does, however, include a sixth 'throwaway year,' as David Lombardi of The Athletic called it, to offset some of the cap hit from the signing bonus.

Armstead's 2020 base salary will be just $2.5 million and carry a cap figure of $6 million after a $3.5 million bonus. That's just three percent of the team's salary cap this year.

Below is the year-by-year breakdown of the contract, as provided by OverTheCap.com.

2020:
$2.5 million base salary (all guaranteed)
$3.5 million prorated bonus
$6 million salary-cap hit

2021:
$6.65 million base salary (all guaranteed)
$5.85 million in various bonuses (prorated, roster, workout)
$12.5 million salary-cap hit

2022:
$14.15 million base salary (none guaranteed)
$5.85 million in various bonuses
$20 million salary-cap hit

2023:
$15.89 million base salary (none guaranteed)
$5.85 million in various bonuses
$21.74 million salary-cap hit

2024:
$17.41 million base salary (none guaranteed)
$5.85 million in various bonuses
$23.26 million salary-cap hit

2025:
$0 base salary
$1.5 million prorated bonuses
$1.5 million salary-cap hit

The news of Arik Armstead's departure from the San Francisco 49ers after nine seasons with the team shocked linebacker Fred Warner. Armstead, a former first-round pick, was an impactful force on the football field. However, his availability over the last two seasons forced the 49ers to reevaluate his contract, and when his salary could not be significantly reduced, the two sides parted ways. "Huge surprise," Warner said of learning that Armstead was being released. "Ever since I've been here, we called him the blueprint for how to be a Niner. That was the longest-tenured Niner that's been here and a guy that's done it right through and through." Warner has been in the NFL long enough to understand how the league works. Over the years, he's watched several

49ers' Brock Purdy focused on 2024, not contract 'nonsense'

By David Bonilla

During the NFL owners' meetings, San Francisco 49ers CEO Jed York noted the significant rise in quarterback salaries in recent years. However, he acknowledged the market value of such players, recognizing that he'll have to sign a substantial check for his young quarterback, Brock Purdy, next year. York stated, "And to me, the quarterback is the most important position, not just in football, but in all sports, and those guys should be paid a lot." Last week, Brock Purdy addressed York's comments, showing no concern about the financial implications that will arise next year. Instead, he

Brock Purdy weighs in on Brandon Aiyuk, 49ers contract talks

By David Bonilla

Brock Purdy set a San Francisco 49ers single-season record in 2023, throwing for 4,280 passing yards. Many of those yards came on passes to his top target, wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who amassed a team-leading and career-high 1,342 receiving yards. Purdy and Aiyuk have developed great chemistry on the football field, and the quarterback would like to build upon that for years to come. However, that is out of his control, and Aiyuk's future is in the hands of the front office. Mike Silver on how Deebo Samuel's contract might be the starting point for a Brandon Aiyuk extension

By Al Sacco
Apr 16

With the 2024 NFL Draft less than a week away, it's common for the rumor mill to start churning, especially with players who are actively seeking a new contract. It was just two short years ago that WR Deebo Samuel requested a trade from the San Francisco 49ers prior to draft day, only for cooler heads to prevail and eventually agree to a new deal. Now, it's WR Brandon Aiyuk's turn to try and get paid and rumors surfaced over the weekend that he too would request to be dealt. While that report was quickly shot down by his agent, there's still a lot of discussion about Aiyuk's future and if other teams will come calling on draft night.
