ESPN analyst Todd McShay released his latest mock draft this morning, and his selection for the San Francisco 49ers mirrors the projection made by fellow analyst Mel Kiper. Both have the team receiving help at safety by adding Grant Delpit of LSU with the No. 31 overall pick.
As it stands, that is the only 49ers selection in the first two days of the NFL Draft. The team does not own a Day 2 pick, which means it will not pick again until the fifth round. Of course, a lot could happen before the draft next month, and San Francisco could trade down to acquire more selections.
Below is what McShay wrote about the selection of Delpit by the 49ers.
"Jimmie Ward is due for free agency, and while Delpit didn't litter the box scores in Death Valley last season, he does have size, speed, instincts and ball skills at safety. To get back to the Super Bowl, coach Kyle Shanahan needs to keep his strength -- the defense -- a strength and continue adding valuable pieces to it. Delpit is effective as an overhang, playing a little closer to the line of scrimmage, and he'd be an asset for the Niners. Other directions might include cornerback depth (Igbinoghene would work here) or wide receiver."
Delpit finished his collegiate career with 199 tackles, 17.5 for a loss, seven sacks, eight interceptions, 24 passes defensed, two forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries. His best season came in 2018 when he recorded 74 tackles, 9.5 for a loss, five sacks, five interceptions, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery.
