Ahkello Witherspoon feels healthy and expects to play in Week 11 against Cardinals

Nov 11, 2019 at 4:10 PM--

San Francisco 49ers cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon was on the field warming up with his teammates before tonight's showdown with the Seattle Seahawks. The 49ers just waived cornerback Dontae Johnson to make room for tight end Garrett Celek, who was activated off of the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list.

So, of course, there was some speculation that Witherspoon might be available tonight. Not necessarily start, but at least be active. That wasn't the case. His name was among the list of inactive players.

That doesn't mean Witherspoon, who suffered a foot sprain during Week 3, isn't healthy enough to play. Matt Barrows of The Athletic notes that the third-year cornerback feels 100-percent and is expected to make his return to the football field for the 49ers' Week 11 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals.

The fact that Witherspoon was limited this past week had more to do with the decision to sit him out.

Witherspoon has to wait six more days to get back on the football field.

There is so much uncertainty for the San Francisco 49ers as they embark into the 2021 offseason. Nearly 40 players are scheduled to become free agents, and the team is pressed up against a salary cap that is expected to drop from $198.2 million to a number that could be as low as $175 million. General manager John Lynch said this week that the 49ers are operating under the assumption that they will have $175 million to work with this year. Anything more would be a bonus. That means some tough decisions may be on the horizon, and the roster could look very different next season. Fred Warner, who will need a contract extension himself fairly soon, isn't too worried about the 49ers' future. After all, 2020's downfall had more to do with injuries than anything else.

The 2020 season was a strange one. For the San Francisco 49ers, it was filled with injuries, and the team suffered setbacks due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Steve Young feels a Deshaun Watson-to-49ers trade is worth giving up the draft picks

By David Bonilla
Jan 14, 2021

How much is Deshaun Watson worth? It wasn't long ago that the Houston Texans determined that he was worth $156 million to be the face of the franchise. If they don't rectify the situation with their young star quarterback soon, they may have to learn how much he is worth in draft compensation. Watson may want out of Houston after expressing some frustration with how the organization handles itself. Could head coach Kyle Shanahan and the San Francisco 49ers come calling? It would cost a lot, but it would also mean an opportunity to fix the mistake of choosing Solomon Thomas over one of the rookie quarterbacks available in the 2017 draft. And no, I'm not counting C.J. Beathard. The question becomes what the Texans might ask in return for Watson, should
