The San Francisco 49ers are planning to release 25-year-old guard Joshua Garnett, according to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area.

The 49ers made Garnett, who played college football at Stanford, the No. 28 overall selection in 2016. He has 22 game appearances and 11 starts through his three NFL seasons and missed all of the 2017 season after landing on injured reserve with a knee injury. All 11 of Garnett's starts came during his rookie 2016 season.

Garnett was limited to seven games last season after suffering a dislocated toe in Week 1. He sustained a dislocated finger at the beginning of training camp and sat out the 49ers' first three preseason games.

Garnett played in the 49ers' preseason finale against the Los Angeles Chargers on Thursday night.

"From what I saw, I thought he played well," head coach Kyle Shanahan said after the game. "I know he had a lot of energy. I know he was excited to play. From what I saw, we ran the ball towards him, I thought he did a good job and he ended up getting cramps there towards the end, but when he was in, I thought he played well."
