The San Francisco 49ers lost several players to injuries over the course of the preseason opener against the Dallas Cowboys. A surprise injury was one that occurred before Saturday. We learned during Saturday night's broadcast that third-year wide receiver Trent Taylor underwent surgery to repair a fracture in his foot.

Taylor took to Twitter to say that he didn't expect to miss much time and vowed to come back better than ever. That was interesting considering how serious the injury sounded when initially reported.

Later, it was clarified to be a fractured small toe. Then head coach Kyle Shanahan clarified the situation further while speaking with reporters after the 17-9 victory.

"We're hoping for Week 1," Shanahan said. "Not counting on it, but hoping for Week 1."

Taylor complained of discomfort following Thursday's practice. An X-ray revealed the severity of the injury and the receiver had a screw inserted into the bone to repair the damage. Shanahan, Taylor, and the 49ers were surprised by the injury.

"He was having a hell of a camp," Shanahan said. "It was disappointing to hear but fortunately, it won't be the year. I think it's about four weeks from Week 1. It's usually a four- to six-week injury, so we'll see how it goes."

Shanahan confirmed that Taylor's injury was a Jones fracture, but that the team caught it early before the damage got worse.

"We're lucky we caught it when it was just a stress fracture," Shanahan said. "Usually, when you go with that for a little bit, it ends up breaking and being a lot worse. He was complaining about a little pain so we got the X-rays, saw a little fracture in there, and then you've got to make the decision whether you just want to go with it, and risk it until it breaks.

"We decided to do it now so it could be more of a four- to six-week injury instead of an eight- to ten-week (one)."
