49ers announce 28 players who will not suit up vs. Cowboys in preseason opener

The San Francisco 49ers announced that the following players will not suit up against the Dallas Cowboys tonight.

  • DL Dee Ford
  • OL Ben Garland

  • QB Jimmy Garoppolo
  • WR Marquise Goodwin
  • FB Kyle Juszczyk
  • TE George Kittle
  • T Mike McGlinchey
  • RB Jerick McKinnon
  • OL Mike Person
  • CB Richard Sherman
  • LB Malcolm Smith
  • T Joe Staley
  • S Jaquiski Tartt
  • WR Trent Taylor
  • OL Laken Tomlinson
  • CB Jason Verrett
  • DB Jimmie Ward

Several of the players on the list above are expected to be starters during the upcoming season. Others are banged up and recovering. Not included on the list are the two players remaining on the 49ers' Active/Physically Unable to Perform list — tight end Garrett Celek (back, concussion) and center Weston Richburg (knee).

The NFL is canceling Weeks 1 and 4 of the preseason, according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. The league is reportedly expected to announce the decision on Thursday. "The move was driven by two primary factors," writes Florio. "First, teams who will be playing preseason games on the road won't want to move that many people. Second, given that no teams had on-field practice sessions in the offseason, coaches would rather have the extra time to work with their teams, and that will happen if they don't have to worry about two extra preseason games." The San Francisco 49ers have been holding player-organized throwing sessions at the Brentwood Academy, which is just outside Nashville, Tennessee. The team moved locations from San Jose State to allow more player participation. One of those players was wide receiver Deebo Samuel, who had been training in Houston, Texas, before this week. San Francisco 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman was part of a Los Angeles Times panel, which also consisted of Rams wide receiver Robert Woods, Hall of Fame coach Tony Dungy, and communist LZ Granderson. Sherman told the story of his time in 2017 when the protesting during the national anthem was spreading across the league following controversial words by President Trump.
