As reported on Saturday, San Francisco 49ers CEO Jed York wasn't too happy seeing his franchise quarterback running downfield and then hauling in a pass with defenders closing in. You know, with the whole recovering-from-an-ACL-injury thing in the back of his mind.
"That was the only play where after practice, Jed, our owner, said to me, 'I really like that play that you had Jimmy cut back into the defense and get hit (he didn't actually get hit),'" head coach Kyle Shanahan shared on NFL Network after Saturday's practice.
York was being sarcastic, and Shanahan could tell.
"Probably taking that [play] out," he continued. "I speak sarcasm well. I understood what he was saying, and you probably won't see that one again."
Shanahan was asked after Sunday's practice why he decided to have Garoppolo run a play like that in the first place.
"Because that's a play that everyone does for a two-point conversation," Shanahan responded. "There's man coverage and he should be wide open and uncovered. Tarvarius Moore made a good play.
"Sometimes you've got to tell them that's part of football. I'm not God. Hopefully, Jimmy's healthy. And I made sure it was on the right side. He cut on his right leg (Garoppolo's injury was to his left knee), so it was very thought out by me."
Shanahan was asked if he was being sarcastic with that last part.
"Kind of," he answered before jokingly blaming a couple of his assistants for scripting the plays.
Shanahan added, "But [York] didn't tell me we can't run the play again, but I saw it in his eyes, and he was right."
