49ers’ DeForest Buckner discusses his ‘I can’t be blocked’ mindset

DeForest Buckner is coming off of his best year as a pro. The San Francisco 49ers defensive tackle racked up a career-high 12 sacks to go along with his 67 combined tackles and three passes defensed in 2018.

Buckner is entering his fourth NFL season. The team exercised its fifth-year option on the budding defensive star in April but hopes to work out a long-term extension to ensure he doesn't leave the 49ers anytime soon.

All of that is up to the team's decision-makers and Buckner's agent. In the meantime, all he can do is focus on his personal goals, which he shared on Wednesday night during the 49ers' annual State of the Franchise event.

"I want to be the best at my position," Buckner said in front of about 1,000 fans. "I approach that every day."

Then Buckner pointed to pass rusher Dee Ford, who the 49ers traded for in March.

"I lent Dee my notebook the first day that he came in because he came in late," Buckner shared. "He was having his baby. He was catching up on some notes, and what was the first note in my notebook?"

"I can't be blocked," Ford responded.

"Exactly," Buckner said. "I told him, 'I can't be blocked.' I approach that every day. That's my mindset going in every day for practice, and that's how I approach every game. I want to be the best at my position."

As for Ford, he was impressed with the 49ers almost immediately after the Kansas City Chiefs traded him. It was during his visit to the team's facility in Santa Clara when he witnessed something he had never seen before.

"I was very impressed the day after the trade when I showed up, seeing about 20 guys working out," Ford explained. "I've never seen that many just at the facility working out, Buck being one. You know, coming off a great season, we were at the Pro Bowl together, that was very impressive to me. One thing you can't fake is hard work."

With a defensive line consisting of several former first-round picks and a bolstered edge rush, the 49ers defense expects to be dominant up front. General manager John Lynch said this offseason that he expects the defensive line to be a dominant force.

Is that the players' expectation heading into the 2019 season?

"Every day," Buckner responded. "Every day has got to be better than the day before. We're stacking days. You've got to be your best self every day, and eventually, the end result, it's going to be incredible."

Jeff Garcia praises Brock Purdy, discusses 49ers QB's growth potential

By David Bonilla
Apr 11

Jeff Garcia has been impressed by San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy in his two seasons with the team. As the last overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, Purdy was thrust into the spotlight after the 49ers faced quarterback injuries and proved his NFL mettle. While some doubts lingered after his rookie season, Purdy's resilience shone through. Despite starting only five regular-season games, he guided the 49ers to the NFC Championship Game, where, unfortunately, he suffered a torn ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his throwing arm. Garcia was among those who wondered whether Purdy could maintain his success into his second season. Last year, coming off surgery, Purdy set a single-season franchise record with 4,280 passing yards. His impressive performance

Rumor: Steelers believe they can acquire 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk at a bargain

By David Bonilla
Apr 17

According to Sports Illustrated contributor Noah Strackbein, who writes for "All Steelers" on the network, there's a level of confidence within the Pittsburgh Steelers organization that they can strike a deal for San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk—and at a bargain rate. "According to a team source, the Steelers and 49ers trade talks are real," Strackbein wrote. "While nothing is imminent, they 'would be surprised if it didn't happen.' But it all comes down to compensation, and Pittsburgh isn't willing to budge much on price." While it seems unlikely that the 49ers would part ways with Aiyuk for anything less than a first-round draft

Deebo Samuel and Brock Purdy are why the 49ers can afford to pay Brandon Aiyuk

By David Bonilla
Apr 10

It's evident that the San Francisco 49ers engaged in long-term financial planning. Much discussion has centered around the feasibility of the team committing significant financial resources to two wide receivers, Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel. Some skeptics question the wisdom of such heavy investment in a single position, especially considering that the 49ers handed Samuel a substantial three-year extension merely two years ago. Adding complexity to this debate is the impending contract extension for quarterback Brock Purdy, positioning him to become the highest-paid player on the team. He will likely even become one of the NFL's highest-paid players. Where he ranks in average salary will depend upon whether he can replicate the stellar performance of his Pro Bowl 2023

George Kittle hopes 49ers offense can 'take another step forward'

By David Bonilla
Apr 12

George Kittle recently spoke with ESPN during the Masters Tournament in Augusta, Georgia, where he joined other NFL stars for the golfing event. Of course, the conversation shifted toward football, with Laura Rutledge asking Kittle to reflect on the team's 2023 season, its Super Bowl defeat, and the motivation it provides for the upcoming season. The tight end believes San Francisco maintained a competitive roster this offseason and is gearing up for another run at a championship. He emphasized the importance of maintaining good health and continual improvement for a successful upcoming season. "Brock Purdy is a fantastic quarterback, and he's only going to get better because he's young," Kittle said. "And we were fortunate enough to be able to keep our entire
