Identifying the next Bill Belichick is probably as fruitless a task as trying to determine the next Tom Brady. It might be a while before we see another head coach capable of winning six Super Bowls. He even has two more as a defensive coordinator on his resume bringing his total to eight.
Still, it is mid-February and NFL Network as a lot of time to fill before the combine kicks off next week. Terrell Davis was asked to identify a coach in the league who could be the next Belichick ... or as close as can be expected.
"There won't be another six (Super Bowl) winning coach," Davis responded on NFL Total Access, "but I think the guy that will be closest to that is Kyle Shanahan, the Niners coach right now. I know he's 10-22 as a coach right now, but he's been doing a lot with less than any coach in the league.
"He's young. He's innovative. He's a leader. He'll be there for a long time, and he'll get that team turned around. And he'll win some rings. It won't be six, and it won't be eight, but he's the next Bill Belichick."
That is high praise from Davis, who obviously has a great deal of confidence in Shanahan's ability to turn things around in San Francisco. The 49ers head coach is entering his third season as the team's head coach. San Francisco signed Shanahan to a six-year deal in February of 2017.
There might never be another Bill Belichick.
But @Terrell_Davis says @49ers HC Kyle Shanahan will be the closest thing to him 👀
