The NFC West is becoming very competitive. Everyone figured the Los Angeles Rams would be a contender this season. Everyone figured the Seattle Seahawks would take a step back with all of their offseason losses, but they remained a playoff contender. That leaves the San Francisco 49ers trying to play catch-up with the rest of the division.
Just because the Rams were aggressive during the last offseason, adding anybody they could to improve the roster, it doesn't mean head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch will also potentially mortgage the future to keep up.
"I look at every season as aggressive," Shanahan said. "You want to be aggressive in everything you do. You don't want to be reckless. We want to add everywhere you can, but you don't just go to the store and spend a lot of money. There's got to be things at the store.
"You've got to see what free agents are available, guys on your own team, contractually who you want to repay and build. You've got to build this the right way. Every year is kind of connected to the next year in terms of the salary cap and stuff like that.
"So we're going to do as much as we can to add in free agency. We'll do everything we can in the draft. We always look for possible trades and things like that. I see it the same as every year, but I feel a lot better going into this third year. We spent two years building it and ready to do some more."
