The San Francisco 49ers were barely holding onto the top spot in the projected draft order at the end of Week 14 thanks to a weaker strength of schedule. The team's position took a hit after its Week 15 victory over the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday at Levi's Stadium.
San Francisco was one of three three-win teams heading into Sunday's action. The two other teams, the Arizona Cardinals and Oakland Raiders, each lost their games and fell to 3-11. The 49ers' record improved to 4-10, the same record as both the New York Jets and Jacksonville Jaguars after Sunday's afternoon games.
Four wins put San Francisco at the No. 3 spot — if the season ended today, which it does not. A weaker strength of schedule (.472) gives the 49ers the edge over the Jets (.500) and Jaguars (.541).
Two more games remain. San Francisco will host the Chicago Bears next week at Levi's Stadium before traveling to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum to finish the season against the Rams. The 49ers could fall even further in the projected draft order even if they lose out. The Bears and Rams have a combined record of 21-6, which will increase San Francisco's strength of schedule once all is said and done.
If you count the strength of schedule from opponents not yet faced, the 49ers sit even lower at the No. 4 spot. The Jets would have a strength of schedule of .502 while San Francisco would sit at .509 and Jacksonville would sit at .549.
The Rams host the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night.
