The San Francisco 49ers secondary is going to be under some duress in Week 7 against the visiting Los Angeles Rams, who'll look to get their high-powered offense going against a Niners defense without cornerbacks Richard Sherman (calf) and Jimmie Ward (hamstring).

Sherman and Ward were both among San Francisco's list of inactives for the contest:

  • CB Richard Sherman
  • CB Jimmie Ward
  • WR Dante Pettis
  • OL Joshua Garnett
  • DL Jullian Taylor
  • OT Shon Coleman
  • DT D.J. Jones

This will put a tremendous amount of pressure on depth cornerbacks, especially second-year pro Ahkello Witherspoon, who'll likely assume a starting role with both Sherman and Ward out. Witherspoon suffered a concussion during the 49ers' 33-30 Week 6 loss to the Green Bay Packers but cleared the league's protocol on head injuries earlier this week.

Los Angeles' passing offense is ranked No. 2 in the NFL entering Week 7, averaging 9.0 yards per pass attempt. The Rams will be without slot receiver Cooper Kupp (leg), but fellow wideouts Brandin Cooks and Robert Woods still pose serious threats to San Francisco's defense.

Oh yeah, and Rams running back Todd Gurley is pretty good too.

The 49ers and Rams kick off at 4:25 p.m. from Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara.

By David Bonilla

The San Francisco 49ers likely aren't finished fortifying their defense and have reportedly expressed interest in bolstering their defensive backfield. If they require assistance making a significant move, one 49ers player is prepared to lend a helping hand. Last week, the Buffalo Bills released All-Pro cornerback Tre'Davious White, who appears to be an ideal fit for San Francisco's needs opposite Charvarius Ward. Over the weekend, Ward took to social media to reveal that he and White share the same agent and that he is willing to nudge the free-agent defensive back in the right direction. Ward described White as a "hand in glove

Did the 49ers get better in the first week of free agency?

By Marc Adams
Mar 16

It's been less than one week since the free agency rumors started swirling. The San Francisco 49ers have been busy, from restructuring contracts to seeing some of their own sign elsewhere to bringing aboard new players. They even pulled off a trade. But have they improved their roster this first week of NFL free agency? Let's take a look at which additions and returning players help, and which losses hurt. Additions that help The addition that helped the most is likely edge rusher Leonard Floyd. The veteran pass rusher played in all 17 games last season and hasn't missed a game since 2017. The 49ers have been searching for that edge rusher opposite of Nick Bosa since Dee Ford. Floyd very well could be that guy, finishing with at least nine sacks
