The last report on Matt Breida was that the San Francisco 49ers running back suffered a mid- to high-ankle sprain during Sunday's 28-18 loss against the Arizona Cardinals. He underwent an MRI on Monday and received some positive news.
The results came back negative and showed that Breida suffered a mid-ankle sprain, according to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area. That's good news, relatively speaking, for the running back because it means the injury wasn't more severe and his recovery should be quicker.
Breida's availability for next Monday night against the Green Bay Packers is still in question and the team's practice reports from this week will be telling. The nice thing is that, if he does play, the running back will have an extra day to rest because of the Monday-night kickoff.
"He may not play next week, as the team wants to give it time to heal and not be something that bothers him throughout the rest of the season," Maiocco reported after Sunday's game.
Breida has been dealing with a number of injuries this season, including knee and shoulder issues over the past two weeks. Before that, he suffered a separated shoulder during the 49ers' exhibition opener on August 9, which kept him out for the remainder of the preseason.
Breida has rushed for 369 yards with a touchdown on 49 carries this season, his second in the NFL. He has also contributed 11 catches for 90 with a touchdown reception. Breida's 7.5 yards per attempt rank first among running backs with 15-or-more carries.
