Welcome to Josh Gordon Monday. The Cleveland Browns are expected to release the wide receiver unless a trade partner comes swooping in at the last minute. Everyone has an opinion on where Gordon should go next. That includes Hall of Fame wide receiver Jerry Rice, who joined 95.7 The Game on Monday morning to discuss the possibility of Gordon ending up with the San Francisco 49ers.
"A great athlete but I don't think he has his head on straight because this guy is very talented and I think Cleveland, they have done everything possible to give him so many opportunities," Rice said on the "Joe, Lo & Dibs" show. "To show up for a meeting late, that had to be really discouraging to the team."
Rice noted that throughout his entire career, he remembers being late to a meeting just once. He doesn't believe Gordon is serious about playing football.
Now, the issues between Gordon and the Browns go far beyond being late to meetings. He returned last December from a three-year suspension for multiple violations of the NFL's substance abuse policy. This year, Gordon missed most of training camp to focus on his ongoing recovery with addiction before rejoining the Browns on August 18.
The Browns ruled Gordon out of Sunday's game against New Orleans Saints with a hamstring injury. Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that the injury occurred during a promotional shoot and not during practice.
Gordon did not travel with his teammates to New Orleans, and when he reported to the Browns facilities on Saturday, he was reportedly not himself, according to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com.
The Browns informed Gordon on Saturday that he will be released on Monday.
"I would stay away," Rice continued. "I think the guy is a great athlete, but it's just way too much going on with him. I don't think he's totally committed. He probably, no doubt, would just come in and do the same thing with the San Francisco 49ers. So, no, I would stay away from that."
