49ers vs. Vikings: Inactives & injury updates for San Francisco in Week 1

Sep 9, 2018 at 9:01 AM--

The San Francisco 49ers are set to open up the 2018 regular season on the road against the Minnesota Vikings, but the following players won't play the Week 1 contest.

It's Week 1 of the 2018 NFL season, and the San Francisco 49ers are on the road in Minnesota to take on the Vikings.

And according to NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco, the following players will be inactive for the contest:

Smith, who missed most of the preseason with a hamstring injury, was listed as doubtful in advance of the contest. After signing a free-agent deal early in 2017, the veteran linebacker has still yet to play a regular-season game with the 49ers.

Offensive lineman Shon Coleman, whom the Niners acquired via trade with the Cleveland Browns, is inactive likely due to the healthy return from swing tackle Garry Gilliam (concussion), who recently cleared the league's protocol on head injuries. Gilliam will back up starting tackles Joe Staley and Mike McGlinchey on Sunday.

Rookies James and Taylor, who both shined during the preseason, also remain inactive largely due to some solid depth at their respective positions.

The 49ers and Vikings kick off at 1 p.m. ET from U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.

After the game, any elevated player will revert back to the practice squad without having to go through waivers. Teams can do this twice with each player before subjecting him to waivers first. The 49ers on Saturday elevated center Hroniss Grasu and cornerback Dontae Johnson from the practice squad while placing wide receiver Deebo Samuel on short-term injured
