The San Francisco 49ers are set to open up the 2018 regular season on the road against the Minnesota Vikings, but the following players won't play the Week 1 contest.
It's Week 1 of the 2018 NFL season, and the San Francisco 49ers are on the road in Minnesota to take on the Vikings.
Smith, who missed most of the preseason with a hamstring injury, was listed as doubtful in advance of the contest. After signing a free-agent deal early in 2017, the veteran linebacker has still yet to play a regular-season game with the 49ers.
Offensive lineman Shon Coleman, whom the Niners acquired via trade with the Cleveland Browns, is inactive likely due to the healthy return from swing tackle Garry Gilliam (concussion), who recently cleared the league's protocol on head injuries. Gilliam will back up starting tackles Joe Staley and Mike McGlinchey on Sunday.
Rookies James and Taylor, who both shined during the preseason, also remain inactive largely due to some solid depth at their respective positions.
The 49ers and Vikings kick off at 1 p.m. ET from U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.
Peter Panacy has been writing about the 49ers since 2011 for outlets like Bleacher Report, Niner Noise, 49ers Webzone, and is occasionally heard as a guest on San Francisco's 95.7 FM The Game and the Niners' flagship station, KNBR 680.
