San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was surprised guard Joshua Garnett (knee) was not healthy enough to practice on Wednesday.
"It's tough to make this team and do it if you're not out there," Shanahan said. "I was a little surprised Garnett didn't make it [on Wednesday]. I'd be more surprised if he's not out there [on Thursday]."
Garnett did not practice on Thursday, and he will not do so on Friday. The guard will miss his fifth-straight practice as he remains listed as day-to-day on the team's injury report.
Defensive end Jeremiah Attaochu (groin) and tight end Cole Wick (knee) won't practice. Wick was carted off the field during Thursday's practice. He is listed as day-to-day, so it's good news on an injury that could have been more serious.
Defensive back Jimmie Ward (hamstring) will return to practice as defensive coordinator Robert Saleh predicted on Thursday. He will be limited, which means he will not participate in team drills. Rookie linebacker Fred Warner (chest) will also be limited.
Saleh discussed the seemingly injury-plagued Ward on Thursday.
"The injury was more almost like precaution more than anything," Saleh said. "He's definitely got a role on this team and it's going to be pretty cool. I'm excited about Jimmie because he is one of our more violent and smartest players. Everybody in the organization loves him so I'm not overly concerned, especially when you're dealing in camp and he's always been a soft tissue guy.
"Once we start getting in the preseason games and things slow down just a little bit, really not concerned about him getting injured as much as excited about what he can bring to our defense."
Rookie wide receiver Dante Pettis will receive the day off to rest.
