It appeared likely that the San Francisco 49ers might drop in the projected draft order following a Week 11 matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and the New York Giants. Then the improbable happened. The Giants upset the heavily-favored Chiefs in overtime on Sunday, improving their record to 2-8, which is a game better than the 1-9 49ers.

The Giants victory means the 49ers remain slotted at the number two spot in next year's draft. Now, if only the New Orleans Saints, whose second-round selection is owned by the 49ers, could manage to lose a few games before it is all said and done. San Francisco traded away its own second-round pick for former New England Patriots quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

Of course, the number one spot belongs to the still-winless Cleveland Browns. How high the 49ers will actually select will be determined by the rest of the season and their final record.

San Francisco has six remaining opponents on its schedule. They are the Seattle Seahawks, Chicago Bears, Houston Texans, Tennessee Titans, Jacksonville Jaguars, and the NFC West-leading Los Angeles Rams. Those teams have a combined record of 33-27. Four of the 49ers' final six opponents have winning records.

Below is the current draft order, based on playoff seeding (21-32), record, and strength of schedule (SOS) for all 32 first-round spots if the season ended today. Of course, the order of the bottom 12 teams will eventually be determined by the playoff results and Super Bowl winner.

By David Bonilla
Apr 19

With the 2024 NFL Draft less than a week away, ESPN contributors have highlighted some prospects who have seen their draft stock rise throughout the evaluation process. Jordan Reid and Matt Miller pinpointed players who could hear their names called at the end of the first round. Interestingly, both of the prospects identified by Reid and Miller play in the trenches but on different sides of the ball. The San Francisco 49ers are widely expected to draft an offensive lineman with their first selection—No. 31 overall. The team mostly ignored the group in free agency. However, it wouldn't surprise many people if the

While most expect the San Francisco 49ers to target an offensive lineman with their first-round pick, NFL Media lead draft writer Eric Edholm has the team going in another direction with the No. 31 overall pick. In his final mock draft of the year, Edholm has the team selecting former Illinois defensive tackle Jer'Zhan Newton, who also goes by "Johnny." "If you're worried Newton's skill set overlaps too much with that of Javon Hargrave, consider that Hargrave is set to hit the salary cap at more than $28 million in the 2025 season -- when he'll be 32 years old," Edholm explained. "As a relentless scheme-wrecker, Newton would help alleviate the

49ers add potential Trent Williams successor in latest NFL.com mock draft

By David Bonilla
Apr 23

Trent Williams will be 36 at the start of the 2024 NFL season. While retirement isn't on his mind just yet, the San Francisco 49ers must consider a succession plan for left tackle. NFL Media's Bucky Brooks unveiled his final mock draft, projecting the San Francisco 49ers to select former Arizona offensive tackle Jordan Morgan with the No. 31 overall pick as their eventual replacement for Williams. "With Trent Williams entering the twilight of his career, the 49ers have to find an eventual replacement on the edge," Brooks noted. "Morgan is a sound blocker at the point of attack with diverse skills
