While Lynch tours the country, Shanahan watches film in Santa Clara

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch has been on a national quarterback scouting tour this week. He's had a stop in Chapel Hill to take a look at North Carolina quarterback Mitch Trubisky, a stop with another team for a workout with Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson, and a stop in South Bend for Notre Dame's pro day featuring quarterback DeShone Kizer.

Meanwhile, head coach Kyle Shanahan has been back home and working out of the team's headquarters in Santa Clara. Sure, he ventured out on a scouting trip on Thursday and drove nearly 13 miles to The Farm to watch Stanford's pro day, but for the most part, he has been in his office.

Following Stanford's pro day, the rookie head coach said that he has preferred to watch player film at the team's headquarters and prepare for the team's offseason program. That is the method Shanahan is taking as the team prepares for the 2017 NFL Draft, which kicks off on April 27.

"We can get a lot more out of being in the office right now and watching a lot more tape," Shanahan said. "Most of these pro days, we get all these videos anyway. There are a few guys we'll have these private workouts for – not just quarterbacks ... It's been better for me to stay in the office with the film and getting our whole coaching staff ready. In two weeks the players get here, so we have a lot to do."

The 49ers own the second overall selection and, should they choose to use the pick on the position, could have their choice of quarterbacks in the draft. However, there are other talented players available at that spot. For instance, edge rusher Solomon Thomas, who took part in Stanford's pro day on Thursday, could be a solid choice at the number two spot.

Shanahan also stated that the 49ers have private workouts lined up with a few players, including quarterbacks, over the next few weeks. However, the head coach would not drop any names. Could one of those quarterbacks be Patrick Mahomes of Texas Tech, who has been getting more and more attention as the draft approaches? After their first-round selection, the 49ers own the number 34 pick, which is the second pick of round two.

If Shanahan cannot be there for the private workouts with quarterbacks, the head coach indicated that he has full confidence in quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello to lead the evaluation.
