The San Francisco 49ers have signed Jeff Zgonina to coach the team's defensive line, per Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area. News that Zgonina would join Kyle Shanahan's staff was first reported last Wednesday by Alex Marvez of the Sporting News.

Zgonina, 46, played 17 years in the NFL as a defensive tackle and was part of the St. Louis Rams team that won Super Bowl XXXIV in 2000. He also played for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Carolina Panthers, Atlanta Falcons, Indianapolis Colts, Miami Dolphins, and Houston Texans. During his time as a player, Zgonina had 448 tackles, 26 sacks, and 13 forced fumbles. His best season was in 2004 with the Miami Dolphins, when he had 63 tackles and five sacks.

Zgonina entered coaching in 2013 as an assistant defensive line coach with the Texans and then joined the Giants last year. In Houston, Zgonina worked with defensive line coach and assistant head coach Bill Kollar, who was his coach at Purdue in 1989. In New York, he worked under defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo and defensive line coach Patrick Graham.

With a big-time matchup between the San Francisco 49ers and Miami Dolphins quickly approaching, two former Niners have voiced their opinions about their new NFL team. While the Niners are focused on this afternoon's game against the New Orleans Saints, Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson Jr. have been speaking with Tyler Dunne of Go Long, sharing their thoughts on next weekend's opponent. Mostert was critical of how the 49ers reacted to his Week 1 injury last season. Head coach Kyle Shanahan initially anticipated the knee injury would keep the running back out for about eight weeks. However, Mostert instead opted to undergo season-ending surgery. "He knew how

The San Francisco 49ers gave up a lot for Christian McCaffrey, sending second-, third-, and fourth-round picks in the 2023 draft and a fifth-round pick in 2024 to the Carolina Panthers in exchange for the star running back. General manager John Lynch acknowledges it was a lot to give up. However, it just speaks to how much the 49ers respected McCaffrey and what he could do in head coach Kyle Shanahan's offense. Lynch and Shanahan already had great confidence in the offense's potential, but they knew that it could be something special with McCaffrey in the picture. "You're not going to make a move like that if you don't think you can compete with anyone in this league, if you don't think this could be the thing to push us over the top," Lynch told NBC Sports Bay

There are a lot of storylines surrounding the upcoming Week 13 matchup between the San Francisco 49ers and the Miami Dolphins. First, it features Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel going up against his former mentor, Kyle Shanahan. It will also feature running backs Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson Jr. returning to Levi's Stadium for the first time. But don't discount the storyline of McDaniel being concerned about facing the 49ers defense—specifically, Nick Bosa. On Monday, the Dolphins coach was asked about his concern about game planning for the 49ers' talented pass rusher without left tackle Terron Armstead, who has been ruled out due to a pectoral injury. "If Nick Bosa has a pulse, you're concerned," McDaniel responded (h/t
