49ers sign Southern Utah punter Brock Miller

Jan 13, 2017 at 3:08 PM--

The San Francisco 49ers may not have a general manager, but that's apparently not stopping them from making offseason moves. The team has signed former Southern Utah University punter Brock Miller to a reserve/future contract.

Miller (5-11, 190 lbs) himself reported the signing yesterday, but the news stayed off the radar until today. The team also has Bradley Pinion on the roster, who was drafted in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL Draft.

"Brock is the first Specialist that I've worked with that is truly a team captain," said his former college coach Ed Lamb. "Always with a great attitude and superior work-ethic. I am confident Brock will be successful in all of his future endeavors."

In 2013, Miller punter 79 times averaging 43.4 yards per attempt. Miller also has a little experience kicking field goals.

"I've got to be ready": 49ers rookie Brock Purdy discusses his mindset as Jimmy Garoppolo's backup

All signs point toward Brock Purdy being active on Sunday against the Denver Broncos. It will be the first time he has suited up for a regular-season NFL game after being inactive for Weeks 1 and 2. Fullback Kyle Juszczyk was the emergency quarterback against the Seattle Seahawks after starter Trey Lance went down with a season-ending ankle injury. San Francisco made Purdy the last selection in the 2022 NFL Draft—Mr. Irrelevant. However, the rookie quarterback has been pretty relevant for the 49ers this year. Coaches were pleased with what he showed in training camp and the preseason. So pleased that Purdy beat out Nate Sudfeld. "He steps into that huddle, and it's his huddle," general manager John Lynch said of Purdy after the 53-man roster was assembled.

Before Wednesday's practice, Jordan Willis was not among the injuries head coach Kyle Shanahan mentioned. The defensive end is dealing with a knee injury, though. It wasn't from the Week 1 loss to the Chicago Bears. Willis was inactive for the game. The 49ers didn't learn about the injury until Monday. Willis will undergo a "clean-up procedure," and the team placed him on its injured reserve list. #49ers DE
