Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area confirms that the San Francisco 49ers will interview Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott next week, something that Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee mentioned yesterday would likely happen.

News of the 49ers' possible interest in McDermott was first reported by Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer.

Update:
The interview will take place on Monday, January 9, per Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle.

McDermott, 42, has been the Panthers' defensive coordinator since 2011. Before that, he was with the Philadelphia Eagles serving as their defensive coordinator and secondary coach. This past season, his defense ranked 12th in points allowed, 13th in total yards allowed, 13th against the pass, and 15th against the run.

In 2015, during Carolina's Super Bowl run season, McDermott's defense ranked 6th in points allowed, 6th in total yards allowed, 11th against the pass, and 4th against the run.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk is very committed to his stance on San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan's parting words from an interview for this past week's State of the Francisco event. "I know we were good enough to win that Super Bowl, and we didn't," Shanahan said. "And that's something we've got to live with. We've got to get right back to that fourth quarter, and get to have a lead, and we've got to finish the job." It's that last part that irked Florio and was the focus of two video discussions, one with Chris Simms, and the

The head coach was asked what he sees from his quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo, who isn't worried about recovering from an ACL injury this offseason. "I think Jimmy had an unbelievable year last year," Shanahan said. "When you look at him statistically, just percentages and stuff of what he did, he's extremely accurate, kept us in some very good situations, and won a few games for us, too. He had a number of games where he had to come out huge on some 3rd-and-longs, some last-minute drives, and make some big plays that won us some games." Shanahan noted Garoppolo's improvement from last offseason, to the start of the regular
