To make room for Smith, the team cut third-string quarterback Nate Davis. The coaching staff has made it clear that Davis' development has been a disappointment. Following the team's final preseason game against the Chargers, head coach Mike Singletary said that Davis' spot on the roster was not guaranteed. However, Davis made the team's 53-man roster after they made their cuts on Friday.
Smith was a fifth-round selection by the Baltimore Ravens in the 2007 NFL Draft. He has appeared in 14 games with 2 starts, completing 48 of 89 passes for 558 yards, three touchdowns, one interception and a quarterback rating of 79.7.
