The San Francisco 49ers face an important decision on Friday. Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk has filed for NFL reinstatement and is reportedly expected to report to the team that day, potentially setting the stage for his departure.

Aiyuk remains on the 49ers' reserve/left squad list, but that could change this week. San Francisco has three options: keep him on the roster, release him, or explore a trade.

A trade would require finding an interested team willing to take on at least part of Aiyuk's contract. That could be challenging, as his actions during his extended absence from the 49ers may have made him less attractive to other teams.

Mike Ginnitti of Spotrac recently outlined the salary cap implications of the 49ers releasing Aiyuk.

If San Francisco releases Aiyuk, the team would incur a $12,350,790 dead cap charge in 2026. That figure includes his 2024 signing bonus, 2025 option bonus, and one-fifth of his 2026 option bonus.

"The 49ers will receive a $4.987M salary cap credit next March for this 2026 bonus charge," Ginnitti noted.

The financial impact would extend beyond the 2026 season. In 2027, the 49ers would carry an additional dead cap charge of $19,298,580, stemming from the 2024 signing bonus and 2025 option bonus.

The total dead cap charges through 2027 would amount to $31,649,370, although the team would receive at least $4.99 million in cap relief during the 2027 NFL league year.

"I say that, because it's 100% plausible to assume that the 49ers have already begun the process of filing paperwork to recoup as much of the 2024/2025 bonuses as possible," Ginnitti wrote. "Just how much remains to be seen, and the timing of the salary void, the active/did not report list placement, etc...will further complicate that outcome, but it stands to reason that San Francisco will see an additional cap credit in the near future."
