Demarcus Robinson might just be the unsung hero of the San Francisco 49ers offense moving forward. What once looked like a minimal depth role for the veteran pass-catcher has suddenly become far more meaningful, especially as early-season injuries have already reshaped the 49ers' receiver room.

Robinson entered the year expected to sit behind a high-profile group led by the returning Deebo Samuel, electrifying rookie De'Zhaun Stribling, and, of course, the team's top threat and future Hall of Famer Mike Evans.


That came after a 2025 season in which Robinson was stuck behind the recently departed Jauan Jennings and Kendrick Bourne, along with Ricky Pearsall, limiting his path to consistent involvement.

Now, the situation looks very different. Stribling is expected to miss possibly upwards of ten weeks following ankle surgery, though the silver lining for both the 49ers and Stribling is that his Achilles was spared. The procedure repaired a major deltoid ligament injury, and he is still expected to return later in the year. Pearsall, however, will miss the entire 2026 season, further opening the door for Robinson to carve out a larger weekly target share.

Why the 49ers Need Demarcus Robinson


Now Robinson wasted little time making his case. After Stribling's injury in San Francisco's Week One contest against the Rams in Australia, Robinson stepped in and caught two passes for 50 yards and a touchdown on three total targets. It was exactly the kind of efficient veteran performance the 49ers needed, even if it was somewhat overshadowed by Samuel's return to the organization.

Samuel looked like his vintage self in that opener, hauling in six of his seven targets for 48 yards and a touchdown while also adding a 12-yard rush. That kind of usage is a reminder that Kyle Shanahan's offense still has plenty of mouths to feed, but it also makes Robinson's showing more encouraging. He didn't need heavy volume to make an impact, and his connection with Brock Purdy could give him a reliable floor if those opportunities grow, since the two have clearly built a strong rapport.

The key question is whether Robinson can earn enough looks in such a high-octane offense. If his target share climbs closer to around five per game, there is a realistic path for him to provide a meaningful Jennings-like boost from a depth role. Robinson's 2024 season with the Rams showed what that could look like, as he finished with 505 receiving yards on 31 receptions while reeling in seven touchdowns.
