To make room for Weeks, the 49ers waived tight end Brayden Willis. The team selected Willis in the seventh round of the 2023 NFL Draft.
The move could be a sign that tight end George Kittle, who is coming off an Achilles injury, has a good chance to play in Week 1.
Weeks did not make the 49ers' initial 53-man roster but was quickly signed to the practice squad. It was widely expected that the veteran long snapper would eventually be promoted to the active roster, either through a standard promotion or by being signed to the 53-man roster ahead of kickoff.
Weeks, 40, initially signed with the 49ers in March 2025 and spent last season with the team. He played 127 special teams snaps for San Francisco in 2025 before re-signing with the 49ers on a one-year contract in February. Willis previously spent 15 seasons with Houston Texans.
