The San Francisco 49ers' offensive line will have its hands full in Week 1 when they face the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia. To the likely disappointment of head coach Kyle Shanahan, defensive tackle Aaron Donald has officially come out of retirement and will return to the Rams on a one-year deal.


Donald joins a Rams defensive front that already includes star defensive end Myles Garrett, whom Los Angeles acquired in a trade in June, creating a formidable challenge in the trenches for opposing offenses.


Donald spent all 10 of his NFL seasons with the Rams before retiring following the 2023 campaign. His departure was undoubtedly welcome news for the 49ers, who no longer had to game-plan for one of the most dominant defenders in NFL history twice each season.

During his illustrious career, Donald amassed 111 sacks while earning 10 Pro Bowl selections and eight first-team All-Pro honors. He also established himself as one of the greatest defensive players of his generation. Donald is a three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year.

The Rams were already the betting favorites to win Super Bowl LXI, and it appears the team is getting even stronger ahead of the regular season. The 49ers will now have to contend with Donald once again when the two NFC West rivals meet in Week 1, and again in Week 14.
