However, the biggest offseason storyline surrounding the team has been the ongoing situation involving wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, whose status remains unresolved. Aiyuk is currently on San Francisco's reserve/left squad list after a turbulent offseason that included public frustration with the organization.
Aiyuk has previously stated that he does not plan to file for reinstatement, which is notable because that step is required for him to return to the roster, forcing the 49ers to release him, which is his ultimate goal.
The receiver's NFL future remains uncertain as training camps get underway.
General manager John Lynch addressed the media Saturday and briefly provided an update on Aiyuk's situation. However, nothing has really changed.
"Brandon Aiyuk, I know you guys are going to have a lot of questions," Lynch told reporters. "Brandon is on a 'left squad' designation. As such, he's not on our 90-man roster. And I'm, personally, and we as an organization, are gonna focus on the players that are here. And so, I don't have anything to say on that, anything to add to that. We wish him well. We wish his family well."
Matt Barrows of The Athletic attempted to get more details from Lynch regarding Aiyuk's status and the team's approach moving forward. However, the 49ers general manager reiterated that he does not plan to provide additional comments on the situation.
When another reporter asked about Aiyuk's previous comments that Lynch attempted to visit him but that the gesture was unwanted, Lynch again kept his response brief.
"I can tell you that, at the forefront of our thoughts with any player is their well-being, and I'll just leave it at that," Lynch said.
For now, the 49ers are focused on the players participating in training camp. They appear to be doing a good job ensuring that the situation with Aiyuk doesn't become a distraction.
