NFL insider Jordan Schultz recently reached out to former Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald to gauge the possibility of the future Hall of Famer coming out of retirement and rejoining his former team.
According to Schultz, Donald did not dismiss the idea.
"I'm for sure flirting with the idea," Donald reportedly told Schultz. "Helluva an opportunity with the Super Bowl in SoFi this year. If I can find the fire, it's a possibility."
The comments come in response to the Rams acquiring star pass rusher Myles Garrett. The move has elevated expectations in Los Angeles as the franchise looks to challenge the reigning Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks and make a run toward Super Bowl LXI, which will be played at SoFi Stadium.
If Donald were to return, the Rams would boast one of the toughest defensive fronts in the NFL. Pairing a three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year with the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year would create a nightmare scenario for opposing offenses—including the 49ers.
Donald retired following the 2023 season after a remarkable 10-year NFL career, all spent with the Rams. During that span, he recorded 111 career sacks and established himself as one of the most dominant defensive players of his era while earning 10 Pro Bowl selections and eight first-team All-Pro honors.
While Donald has been away from the game for more than two years, the possibility of him lining up alongside Garrett is enough to grab the attention of the 49ers and the rest of the NFC West.
