While some have speculated that Aiyuk will end up with the Commanders, where he would reunite with his friend, quarterback Jayden Daniels. The two were briefly teammates in college.
The 49ers have made their intentions clear. As early as January's end-of-season press conference, general manager John Lynch acknowledged that Aiyuk's tenure with the team is likely over. The comments came after months of insistence that Aiyuk remained part of San Francisco's future plans.
"I think it's safe to say that he's played his last snap with the Niners," Lynch said. "It's unfortunate—a situation that just went awry."
The relationship between the 49ers and Aiyuk deteriorated during his rehab from the ACL and MCL injuries he suffered in 2024. It led to Aiyuk cutting off communication with the team, even as coaches were still anticipating—or hoping for—his return.
Complicating matters is Aiyuk's contract. The receiver signed a four-year, $120 million extension ahead of the 2024 season—a deal that Washington wants no part of. The most likely outcome is that the 49ers eventually release Aiyuk—and everyone knows that.
"Multiple team sources said Washington is well aware of Aiyuk's desire to play with Daniels," ESPN's John Keim wrote. "But Aiyuk remains under contract, and the Commanders would be unlikely to trade for him or, when free, sign him to anything other than a one-year, prove-it deal."
In the meantime, San Francisco has already begun reshaping its receiver room. The 49ers added veterans Mike Evans and Christian Kirk in free agency and are counting on younger players like third-year wideout Ricky Pearsall to stay healthy and take on a larger role in 2026.
