Quarterback Mac Jones has made a strong impression in his first season with the San Francisco 49ers. Originally expected to sit behind Brock Purdy and learn, Jones was thrust into action after Purdy suffered a turf toe injury.

In his eight starts, Jones quickly became one of the 49ers' most impactful offseason additions. He led the team to five wins, throwing for 2,151 yards with 13 touchdowns and six interceptions, keeping San Francisco in playoff contention.

With several quarterback-needy teams likely to inquire about Jones, who is under contract through the 2026 season, trade speculation is inevitable. However, given his contributions this year, the 49ers may be reluctant to part ways with the veteran quarterback, who has revitalized his career under head coach Kyle Shanahan.

NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero shared the latest on Jones, saying, "Full anticipation there is going to be interest in Mac Jones, in a trade, in this offseason."

However, the 49ers may value his presence over any potential draft compensation.

San Francisco's leadership expressed interest in holding onto Jones, with Shanahan stating, "I'd be very surprised if Mac wasn't around us next year."

Pelissero also highlighted Purdy's injury history as another reason the 49ers might hesitate to trade Jones.

"Frankly, Brock Purdy's history would suggest there's a decent chance that he may miss a game or two or five coming up this season, and in that case, you need a really good backup quarterback," Pelissero explained.

While Jones could generate trade interest, Pelissero notes that the 49ers have little incentive to move him. But it's also a year where the rookie quarterback class and free-agent options are limited.

"I would certainly anticipate there will be interest in Mac Jones if the 49ers are willing to answer the phone," Pelissero added.

This week, Jones was asked about the trade chatter. He noted that he's proven he can be an NFL starter and isn't worrying too much about what might happen this offseason.

"I think it's good to be talked about, and at the end of the day, I want to just keep playing good ball," Jones said.
