49ers dilemma: Peter Schrager shares latest on Trent Williams situation

The San Francisco 49ers are reportedly open to trading star left tackle Trent Williams if the two sides cannot reach a new contract agreement. That scenario, however, is not exactly plan A.

San Francisco understands how valuable Williams remains to the offense. The veteran tackle is still widely regarded as one of the best offensive linemen in the NFL — a future Hall of Famer.

At the same time, Williams is scheduled to carry a cap hit of nearly $39 million in 2026 — a number the 49ers would prefer to reduce as they manage their long-term salary cap situation.

Williams also holds significant leverage in the negotiations. The 49ers have yet to identify a clear successor at left tackle, and the veteran knows his value across the league. If he were to become available, whether via trade or free agency, several teams would likely show strong interest.

According to Jason La Canfora of SportsBoom, the Kansas City Chiefs are viewed as a potential suitor that would be "ready to pounce" if Williams became available.

Meanwhile, ESPN's Peter Schrager recently discussed the situation during an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, noting that the 49ers would still prefer to keep their All-Pro left tackle in San Francisco.

However, Schrager also emphasized that general manager John Lynch's phone line is open, ready to hear what other teams might have to offer.

"Do you want the best tackle of his generation? Okay, well, what's it going to cost?" Schrager said. "Because his number right now, and what he's expecting, if he gets another contract, is going to be exorbitant."

Even so, Schrager believes the 49ers' priority remains finding a way to work out a deal with Williams rather than moving on.

"He could be had if you have a certain number, if you have a certain offer," Schrager added. "But make no mistake about it: the 49ers absolutely love Trent Williams. They want to get it done. The numbers, though, just like we have seen with so many star players in the last couple of years, the numbers have to make sense."
