Aiyuk had a breakout season in 2023, catching 75 passes for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns. Although he didn't make the Pro Bowl, Aiyuk was named Second-Team All-Pro and earned himself a new contract. But what happened next was nothing short of a soap opera.
Following the 2023 season, the former first-round pick took to social media, seemingly voicing his frustration with the team. After the Super Bowl in February 2024, some close to Aiyuk began suggesting he would not return to San Francisco. But Aiyuk and the 49ers agreed to a 4-year, $120 million contract extension just before the All-Pro receiver was traded. Things seemed to be headed in the right direction, but that wasn't the case.
Aiyuk started the 2024 season on a bad note that included being berated by Head Coach Kyle Shanahan for wearing the wrong shorts and struggling early in the season. But just about the time Aiyuk seemed to be turning a corner, he suffered a season-ending knee injury. His 2024 season was over, and so it seems, his time with the 49ers.
There were rumors that the 49ers immediately regretted Aiyuk's new contract, and last month, it was reported that the team had voided the guarantees in Aiyuk's post-2025 contract. The wide receiver did not choose to fight the decision, leading all to believe both sides wanted a fresh start. And while Shanahan and GM John Lynch continued to remain hopeful that Aiyuk could return this season, the decision was finally made to end his 2025 campaign.
And so Aiyuk, who found himself in Shanahan's dog house early in his career, will now be looking for a new place to reside in 2026.
