Reporters didn't get the chance to address the signing until Friday, as the news broke just after Kyle Shanahan's previous media availability on Wednesday. According to the head coach, the 49ers have monitored Kendricks throughout the season.
"We've been talking with him throughout the year," Shanahan said on Friday. "I know he had other options throughout the year, but the timing was right for him, and we've been wanting him on board, so we were pumped that he wanted to come."
Shanahan was also asked whether last year's change of heart came up in their recent conversations.
"Yeah, it was brought up," Shanahan said with a smile. "We're all good. Nah, we understand it now. You're always frustrated at the time, but I understand why he did it."
The 49ers have ruled out three players for Sunday's matchup against the Cleveland Browns, including linebacker Tatum Bethune (ankle). San Francisco may look to elevate Kendricks from the practice squad during Saturday's roster moves, depending on positional needs.
