Head coach Kyle Shanahan has already announced that Mac Jones will start in Week 10, regardless of whether Purdy is active. However, fans may not have to wait long to see the 49ers' starting quarterback back in action.
According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, if Purdy does not suit up against the Rams, the 49ers expect he'll return in Week 11 against the Arizona Cardinals.
"He's still dealing with the turf toe," Fowler said Saturday on SportsCenter. "I continue to hear that it was just sort of one of those nasty, difficult injuries."
Purdy has appeared in just two games this season. He initially suffered the injury in Week 1 against the Seattle Seahawks and aggravated it upon returning in Week 4 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
"He reset himself in Week 4, made it worse when he tried to come back." Fowler continued. "It's been a long month trying to recoup. You've got Mac Jones starting this week.
"The 49ers are going to decide before game time whether Brock Purdy will be the number two, so he will not start. But I checked with somebody with the team who said that he is getting a lot closer."
Fowler added, "They're hopeful that if it's not this week, it will definitely be next week. That's at least the loose plan right now."
H/t to Tristi Rodriguez of NBC Sports Bay Area for the find.
