Kevin Givens' practice window opens
Defensive tackle Kevin Givens' practice window has officially opened, allowing the 49ers 21 days to evaluate him before deciding whether to activate him from injured reserve. Earlier this week, the team also opened the practice window for safety Malik Mustapha.
"We'll see how the week goes," Shanahan said. "No guarantees they'll be ready for Sunday, but we'll kind of start basing that off how they look today a little bit, how they look leading up to this point. We'll see how they go."
Brock Purdy's status remains uncertain
Quarterback Brock Purdy has already missed three games this season and appears likely to miss a fourth. Shanahan was asked if the 49ers have considered placing him on injured reserve, which would force the signal-caller to miss at least four more games.
The coach stated that the team has not considered the option, simply adding, "He's progressing."
Purdy did not travel with the 49ers to Southern California for last week's game against the Los Angeles Rams. Shanahan explained the reasoning behind that decision.
"Just with where he was," Shanahan said. "We thought when he traveled the first time, he was a little sore after it, so we just don't want him to fly and everything for that reason."
Not counting on Ricky Pearsall
Wide receiver Ricky Pearsall, who also missed the Rams game, remains uncertain for Sunday's clash against the Buccaneers.
"We were hoping last week that he'd probably be able to get in [to practice] this week," Shanahan said. "He wasn't able to Monday, he's not able to today, so we'll see if there's a turn here on Thursday or Friday, but I'm not counting on it right now."
Updates on George Kittle and Ben Bartch
Shanahan also provided updates on tight end George Kittle and offensive linemen Ben Bartch, stating that both are making good progress. While Kittle could potentially return to practice following the Buccaneers game, Shanahan cautioned that it's not guaranteed.
"Hopefully, we'll have a chance at Kittle next week," Shanahan said. "Just a chance. I don't think Bartch is up next week, though."
