Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area was the first to report the team's interest in Campbell, whom Green Bay released on Wednesday.
The Atlanta Falcons selected Campbell (6-4, 232) out of Minnesota in the fourth round (No. 115 overall) of the 2016 NFL Draft. In 11 starts with the Packers last season, he registered 75 tackles, including three for a loss, two quarterbacks defensed hits, and a pas, per Pro Football Reference.
The news of San Francisco's signing of Campbell comes after the team re-signed linebacker Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles to a one-year deal. Another 49ers linebacker, Oren Burks, became a free agent on Wednesday, and veteran Eric Kendricks backed out of an agreement to sign with the team, opting to join the Dallas Cowboys instead.
Campbell, 30, has recorded 779 tackles, including 40 for a loss, 22 quarterback hits, 9.5 sacks, 28 passes defensed, seven interceptions, a touchdown, and eight forced fumbles in 115 game appearances (110 starts) over his eight NFL seasons with the Falcons, Arizona Cardinals, and Packers.
He earned first-team All-Pro honors in 2021 after amassing a career-high 146 tackles, two sacks, two interceptions, five passes defensed, and two forced fumbles.
