Samuel practiced all week and wasn't on the team's Friday injury report, indicating he was set to play today against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Williams' status was less certain. While he returned to the practice field on Thursday, he was officially listed as "questionable" for the Week 10 contest. Williams and head coach Kyle Shanahan sounded less than optimistic about his chances of playing.
"I think he's real questionable to be playing," Shanahan said.
Williams added, "It's up in the air; it really is."
With the veteran left tackle ailing, the 49ers should have Jaylon Moore ready to go in case Williams needs a breather during the action. The team has a lot of confidence in the backup offensive lineman.
"I think Jaylon's played his butt off," Williams told reporters on Friday before the 49ers departed for Jacksonville. "I've been really, really impressed with the way he's performed. Obviously, I watched it closely the last few games, so I've been really impressed with his progress that he's made from last year to this year, even from the preseason to now. He details his work. He's definitely a young, improving player, and I got a lot of faith in him if he had to do it again."
Also listed as "questionable" on Friday was defensive tackle Javon Hargrave, who had a knee issue flare up during Thursday's practice. However, he is active and set to play.
Chase Young's 49ers debut
The 49ers traded a 2024 compensatory pick to the Washington Commanders for Chase Young. The defensive end will make his red and gold debut against the Jaguars.
"He's an impressive player, and he's been playing well here of late," general manager John Lynch recently stated. "He's been playing a lot here of late as well. We've always said that the D-line is really the engine that drives, not just this defense, but this team. And we like our D-line, but we love adding to it as well.
"We always want more from that unit, and I think it was somewhat of a no-brainer when Chase was there, available."
Young is anticipated to contribute significantly in his debut. He joins a formidable defensive line that includes his former Ohio State teammate, Nick Bosa, along with Javon Hargrave and Arik Armstead. The team looks forward to Young's substantial impact on the field.
Lynch added, "I think he ought to be raring and ready to go, and we're excited to get him out there."
