The Washington Commanders were initially seeking second- and fifth-round draft picks in exchange for Young.
"The Commanders, however, lowered their asking price for defensive end Chase Young after some teams expressed medical concerns about him, according to sources," Schefter wrote.
The 49ers ended up getting Young ahead of the trade deadline, adding to an already impressive defensive front that includes his former Ohio State teammate, Nick Bosa. Young is set to make his debut in red and gold against the Jacksonville Jaguars today.
Schefter notes that Young was not the only player the 49ers were targeting as a potential trade option.
"The 49ers went looking for big names at the NFL trade deadline, checking on the availability of Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain II, Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson, and then-Commanders defensive end Montez Sweat, among others, sources told ESPN," Schefter reports.
While the 49ers' interest in Johnson and Sweat was already known, Schefter confirmed their inquiries about Surtain.
Coming off their bye week and losing three consecutive games, the 49ers aim to reverse their fortunes today in Jacksonville.
