The 49ers needed to clear five roster spots before today's deadline. Earlier today, general manager John Lynch announced that San Francisco would place cornerback Jason Verrett on the reserve/physically-unable-to-perform (PUP) list to start the season. Rookie defensive tackle Kalia Davis will start on the reserve/non-football-injury (NFI) list.
Jimmy Garoppolo remains on the roster for now, as none of today's moves involved the veteran quarterback. Before today's practice, general manager John Lynch was asked if the 49ers need to do anything with Garoppolo before today's deadline.
"No, he's doing great," Lynch responded, per Cam Inman of Bay Area News Group.
This is the second roster cut-down deadline ahead of the 2022 season. The first took place on August 16, when NFL teams had to get to a maximum of 85 players. In one week, by 1 p.m. PT on August 30, NFL teams will need to reach the 53-player roster limit.
Between now and then, the 49ers will place the Houston Texans in their preseason finale and then have 17 days until their regular-season opener at Soldier Field against the Chicago Bears.
