49ers GM John Lynch on Nick Bosa's extension: Most likely to happen next year

San Francisco 49ers star receiver Deebo Samuel's extension talks have been at the forefront of 49ers' news this offseason. However, there is another star from the 2019 draft class that has yet to receive an extension—defensive end Nick Bosa.

Bosa, who bounced back from a torn ACL in 2020 with 15.5 sacks last season, has a different situation from Samuel, as he was a first-round pick, meaning the Ohio State edge rusher has a fifth-year option in his contract, as opposed to entering the final year of his deal.

General manager John Lynch addressed the topic at San Francisco's pre-training camp press conference on Tuesday, acknowledging that extension talks with Bosa will likely occur next year due to precedent.

"If you look at our history, our cadence, most of our deals are done with one year left on the contract, and Nick's got two years left, and so that doesn't make it impossible, but it makes it more likely that it's something that will be addressed next year. No absolutes, never say never, but here's what I do know: as long as we're here, Nick Bosa's going to be a part of the 49ers and he's going to be paid handsomely to do so. His time's coming and when it does, he'll get what he deserves, because man, what a special player."

Bosa is entering his fourth season with the 49ers and will headline a deep defensive line unit that ranked among the league's best in 2021, coming fifth in sacks, while the 49ers defense also ranked third in yards allowed per game, fifth in yards per carry, and seventh in defensive DVOA, according to Football Outsiders.

Bosa's fifth-year option for 2023 was exercised by the 49ers earlier this offseason. Currently, he stands to make $17.8 million in 2023, all of which is fully guaranteed, but that figure will likely change if an extension occurs next offseason.
