San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters on Tuesday after the team's first practice of its three-day mandatory minicamp. Obviously, reporters were eager to ask about the two players who are eligible for contract extensions—wide receiver Deebo Samuel and defensive end Nick Bosa.

Earlier this offseason, Samuel requested to be traded. Bosa has been training in Florida with his brother, Joey Bosa of the Los Angeles Chargers.


Both Samuel and Bosa were in attendance on Tuesday. Samuel was not suited up, and left for the weight room following warmups. Bosa took part in individual drills.

The 49ers coach was asked about the team's relationship with Samuel amid the offseason drama.

"I think it's always been alright," Shanahan responded. "I mean, I know we go through the business part of this league and things like that, but I don't think the relationship was ever too far away to not get it back to normal. And I think we're working on that. Any time you're away from each other for a while, it's always harder, but it's good to get him back in here, and start getting around the guys again."

Shanahan didn't want to get into the details of the ongoing negotiations but indicated that the two sides are always talking. As for the coach's personal relationship with the wide receiver, that has not been impacted by the business side of things.

"I love our relationship with Deebo," Shanahan said. "Hopefully, that will help us be able to solve this contractually before we get to the season."


Shanahan added that it is unlikely that Samuel will practice this week.

"I'll talk to him about it," he said. "I think us not being around each other much, I don't think that's smart for the team or him. So that's not something I'm really counting on him doing, but I'll see where he's at, but I think he'll be all right with it too."

Shanahan revealed that contract negotiations have not yet started with Bosa. However, the coach is confident that the two sides will eventually work out an extension.

"That's how both sides are going at it now," Shanahan said. "I'm not too concerned with it. I fully expect Nick Bosa being here for a very long time. But seeing him for the first time in a while, Nick always takes care of himself as good as any athlete I've ever been around, and he had a good Florida tan, seeing him yesterday. His quads are still huge, and he's ready to play football whenever it's time to go."
