David Lombardi of The Athletic reports that the 49ers also inquired about a potential trade for Minnesota Vikings cornerback Cameron Dantzler.
"A source said the 49ers also inquired about a potential trade for second-year Vikings cornerback Cameron Dantzler, who was a healthy scratch in Minnesota's season opener at Cincinnati," wrote Lombardi.
That would indicate that San Francisco is—or was—doing some serious work looking into its options to fix a position that is quickly losing depth.
"I know [general manager] John [Lynch] and all those guys have been looking into all those possibilities all day," head coach Kyle Shanahan said yesterday via a conference call when asked about potential roster moves.
The 49ers' other starting cornerback, Emmanuel Moseley, has been dealing with a knee injury and was inactive for Sunday's game against the Detroit Lions. The team also signed veteran cornerback Josh Norman last week. He, too, was inactive this past weekend.
The Vikings made Dantzler a third-round draft pick out of Mississippi State in last year's draft. He recorded 46 tackles, three tackles for a loss, two interceptions, four passes defensed, and a forced fumble through 11 games and 10 starts as a rookie. The cornerback missed two games last season due to a neck injury.
San Francisco conducted a pre-draft interview with Dantzler leading to last year's draft.
