Tight end Daniel Helm is also part of the roster departures, per ESPN's Field Yates. He was waived with an injury waiver.
Later, the 49ers officially announced all three moves. Jones signed a one-year contract, per the team.
The Dallas Cowboys signed Jones (6-1, 220) as an undrafted free agent out of Jacksonville in 2016. His last playing time came in 2018 when he recorded 11 receptions for 80 yards and a touchdown. The receiver spent the 2019 season on the Dolphins' practice squad and was waived before the start of last season.
Jones, 26, also spent time with the Detroit Lions and Houston Texans.
San Francisco initially signed Johnson, 35, to its practice squad in November of 2020. He signed a reserve/future contract on January 15. Last season was Helm's second stint with the 49ers.
The 49ers Communications staff provided the following additional information.
A 26-year-old native of Clermont, FL, Jones attended Jacksonville University, where he appeared in 41 games (29 starts) and registered 144 receptions for 2,120 yards and 17 touchdowns. As a senior in 2015, Jones started 10 games and finished with 60 catches for 890 yards and eight touchdowns.
Helm (6-4, 225) re-signed with the 49ers on March 17, 2021. He appeared in the first five games of his career last season with the 49ers.
