Lance's May birthday makes him the youngest quarterback in this year's draft class and the youngest player on San Francisco's roster.
The 49ers traded multiple first-round picks through 2023 and a third-rounder next year to move up to select Lance. He played in just one game last season, an October 3, 2020, non-conference win over Central Arkansas. North Dakota State's season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2019, in his only full collegiate season as a starter, Lance completed 66.9 percent of his passes for 2,786 yards with 28 passing touchdowns and no interceptions through 16 games while adding 1,100 rushing yards with 14 rushing touchdowns.
49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch have commented about how mature they found Lance to be during their pre-draft interactions. The quarterback is already hard at work getting to know his new teammates.
"For me, it's just earning that mutual level of respect, and that's earned, especially as a quarterback," Lance told reporters minutes after being drafted. "Obviously, you have to make sacrifices. This is what I signed up for, and this is what I love to do, and I can't wait to do it. But, just for me, it's about treating people the right way and leaving an impact on people. That's bigger than football."
